A “bath” as well as anointing with oil would be normal first steps in preparing for marriage according to Ezekiel 16:9 (Block, p. 683). It is also interesting to note that those who are in mourning—including mourning death—would refrain from washing and anointing, and wear garments that revealed their mourning (cf. 2 Sam. 12:20; 14:2; Dan. 10:3; cf. Gen. 38:14, 19).
